Takes More than a Pill

For sure, it takes more than a pill to make and keep your body, your health and your life in order and shape.

I say “YEAH!!” to the recently announced ban by the FTC on the three New Jersey based companies (shame on them) that were among four fined over $25M for marketing false claims to the consumer public about how “easy it might be to lose weight” if you took their pills.

If you ever worked out – with or without a trainer – you already know the regular, consistent work necessary to burn calories, build muscle and feed and stengthen a healthy heart and bones. Taking a pill to “speed up” the process is utterly nonsensical! But our world of “internet speed,” “instanteous results, ” and the “now-culture, ” created a billion dollar market for a couple of criminals.

EXCERPT FROM THE NATIONAL NEWS – January 4, 2007

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Federal Trade Commission on Thursday fined the marketers of four weight-loss pills $25 million for making false advertising claims ranging from rapid weight loss to reducing the risk of cancer.

FTC Chairman Deborah Platt Majoras said the products would remain on store shelves, but that the companies would have to stop making the false claims.

“What we challenge is the marketing of the claims,’’ she said. “The marketers are required to back up the claims with the science and if they can’t do that they can’t make the claim. But we don’t ban the products from the shelves.’’

The FTC investigated a variety of claims made — including rapid weight loss and reduction in the risk of osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and even cancer, Majoras noted.

Fines were levied against marketers of Xenadrine EFX, One A Day Weight Smart, CortiSlim and TrimSpa.
