Yoga, Heat & Body Changes

yoga-balance-tree I am not completely sure that these “interesting facts” are irrefutable, but my personal testimony is that it sure feels good in the process.  The ‘after-effect’ of the Hot Yoga class is complete mental and physical release and relaxation.  I am close to the point of renewal for my 10-series sessions at Surya  Yoga Academy in Hoboken. Here are a few of the reasons I will continue to regularly participate. Read the rest of this entry →

Do Nothing?!

Doing Nothing It is pretty amazing. The damage we can do to ourselves without even being present in the process. I work extremely hard at helping other people work hard on themselves. I pride myself on the consistent, hard work I do to my own body. I admonish others to work to their own limits and set a mean example of exactly that in my own work.

Whether it be strength training in the gym, Pilates in the studio, or my feeble attempts at following my yoga instructor, I try to work with high quality, excellent form and love pushing myself to that end to achieve the best results for the time spent at work. Read the rest of this entry →

The Right Carb

Oven Fries During the winter months you might find you need a little extra energy to throw around that snow, shovel under those tires and tredge those bags up the icy steps.  Comfort food with that lean protein, right?

Eating the right kind of carb – prepared the right way – can give you the extra fuel source you need without compromising all the hard work you are doing with your body.

Metabolism Slows Down After 40

Gina Jackson 45+ Years of Age This question came in in the past week from another site for which I contribute Strength Training commentary, VitalHealthZone.  Given that the writer and I share the same age, I thought it was purposeful to share my response, given perhaps the differences in our perspectives on managing peri-menopause and the required work, nutrition and support of a body over 40+

OMG! No Wonder!

curly_2 I shouldn’t be surprised because the results have been magnificent.  But this surely explains why I have been sooooo happy with my haircut.  Turns out Gary Evans, my new stylist extraordinare, is a celebrity stylist for many names you may know, and some we can’t even mention.

Princess Collar

This is a personal story.  It reflects a very personal artistic piece.  A custom design.  I call it my Princess Collar.  All princess collar the elements are one of a kind.  Each stone, each bead, each strand; the origin of each of the stones; the love, respect and honor of the man who selected the gems, the artist who crafted the finished piece and the delight I have in adorning my neck with the history they represent. Hot Hatha + Soothing Bath + Souful Music = Renewed Spirit

Just finished a long day and a glorious one.  Thanks to two fabulous classes of Pilates students (both new and old) an amazing yoga teacher, Anayra Calederon, the warmest temperatures January could offer, a luxurious hot bath and the soulful music of Eva Cassidy.

The renewed pursuit of Yoga as a healing, stretching and relaxing practice will be a new experience, for me in 2010.  I took my second class today, at Surya Yoga and haven’t stopped gushing about the studio and the two fabulous instructors I had the pleasure of working with (Kelly and Anayra.)  I signed up immediately for a 10-session pack and enjoyed Kelly and Anayra on Thurs and Sat, respectively.  My plan is to use the 10-pack, re-new regularly as another mind/body part of my regmine going forward. Surya Yoga, YES!

Supplements, Aging and Obesity

This is a good read for those young males seeking to train your body to add “bulk” with the use of supplements. There collagen may be a few hidden “ah-ha’s” in the NYT article.

I found it in stark contrast to the Healthy Aging, With Nary a Supplement by Jane Brody a few days earlier, which was aimed at the older fitness consumer, more likely female, such as myself (and a avid supplement user of Tonalin CLA, Collagen + C and Reservatrol; none of which are mentioned/referenced in the Brody article) where conscious attention is recommended toward healthy diet and exercise and a deep bent toward natural supplementation from the nutrients derived in our food choices.

Eating Green to Stay Lean

Kick-ass workout today. Started at 830am in the gym with leg presses and I pumped up the volume to three plates. That means, ladies that I pressed 270 pounds for 20 reps about 4-5 sets. After which I worked my hamstrings, quads and adductors and abductors.

Then the best part, because of the 50 degree temperature of this sweet December, post-Christmas morning, was my 3.5 mile run outside in my Kangoo Jumps which people don’t seem to be surprised with anymore….I am just part of the woodwork and the shoes are the paint on my woodwork. Healing the Body with Pilates

Pilates is all about breathing, moving and building your strength; one breath at a time.   To heal and correct a body’s old habits requires re-training and re-education of motor control.  This involves new postures, movement patterns, mobility concerns and muscle imbalances. The Pilates method is a graceful, yet rigorous form of addressing each of these areas.  Private session training helps one to learn and work towards removing painful postures, correcting faulty movement patterns, improving mobility where needed and increasing stability where required.  In a studio setting, student and teacher work together to create an environment for optimal muscle balance and function.
