Taking Strength Training Seriously

Jim and Bob are two of the best examples I can provide of taking "the Gift of Fitness" seriously.  Jim's girlfriend gave him a gift certificate for 5 private sessions to get him started on regular use of the gym equipment within his facility.  A self-employed father of a pre-teen that like many, struggled with schedules, clients, personal health issues and several bad eating habits.  Not unlike the vast majority of us, huh?

Jim finished his gift pack and gleefully signed on for a renewal while consciously following the regimen outlined of cardio, upper/lower body split training days and adhering to a more disciplined approach to eating.  He wanted to gain control of the middle age spread he was developing and admittedly discounted the fact that the morning bagel and afternoon beer would add more time, money and energy to eliminating the belly roll.

Partnering Up for Fitness

When the next renewal cycle presented itself, Jim returned the Gift of Fitness to his business partner and colleague, Bob.  Both work together and had health habits they wanted to change and/or modify.  Partnering for the training was a great way to support each other in the process.

Any personal fitness program can be developed and delivered by a fitness professional as a semi-private session for the purpose of a) buddy training, b) reducing the hourly rate.   By using the gym twice a week in a program, Jim and Bob worked together with me on one of the days and with each other on a second day. Their goals were weight loss, smoking cessation and core abdominal strength.

It is still a work in progress for both guys.  Sometimes the pressure of life, clients, children and age gets in the way, yet, there is no doubt that progress is evident in both of them.

I frequently encouraged a cardio circuit within our hour session to maintain the heart rate for maximum burn during our training.  In addition, as you will see from the footage of an actual training hour, each were introduced (and mastered I might add) to several new pieces of equipment and training protocols to support balance, stability, control and focus of the core while building strength and stamina in their muscles.

After you watch the video, leave a comment to let Jim and Bob know what you think about their progress along the way.  Not bad work for two silver haired dads, huh?
